This is a mathematical purity conversion. It preserves calculated pure-gold content and does not account for manufacturing loss, stones, solder or other non-gold components.

Purity reference

Compare common gold karats

Karat indicates how much of a 24-part gold alloy is represented by gold. Gold Ledger supports five commonly used purity levels.

Worked example

10g of 22K gold

Convert the weight to its calculated pure-gold content and then express that gold at 24K.

Starting weight10g
Karat ratio22 ÷ 24
Calculated pure gold9.167g

Therefore, 10g of 22K gold corresponds to approximately 9.167g of 24K gold under the calculator's karat-ratio model.

Karat vs percentage

Two related purity representations

Karat purity is based on a 24-part scale. For mathematical weight conversion, Gold Ledger uses ratios such as 22/24 or 18/24.

The percentage labels shown in the interface are conventional purity references—for example, 22K is displayed as approximately 91.6% and 18K as 75%.

Keeping these concepts separate prevents a rounded display percentage from changing the underlying karat conversion.

Calculator ≠ purity test

This tool cannot determine whether a physical ornament is actually 22K, 18K or another purity. It only converts the purity value you select. Actual jewellery may also include stones, solder and other non-gold components.

FAQ

Gold purity questions

What does a gold purity calculator do?

It estimates the pure-gold content of a given weight and calculates the equivalent weight at another karat while preserving the same calculated pure-gold content.

How do you convert 22K gold to 24K?

Using the karat ratio, first calculate the pure-gold content of the 22K weight and then express that amount as an equivalent 24K weight.

How much 24K gold is equivalent to 10 grams of 22K gold?

Using the 22/24 karat ratio, 10 grams of 22K gold contains approximately 9.167 grams of calculated pure-gold content, equivalent to about 9.167 grams at 24K.

How much 22K gold is equivalent to 10 grams of 24K gold?

Using the karat-ratio conversion, 10 grams of 24K gold corresponds to approximately 10.909 grams of 22K gold for the same calculated pure-gold content.

Is 22K gold the same as 91.6% purity?

22K gold is commonly represented as approximately 91.6% purity. Gold Ledger also uses the exact 22/24 karat ratio for its mathematical weight-conversion calculation.

What gold purities does this calculator support?

The calculator currently supports 24K, 22K, 20K, 18K and 14K gold.

Does this calculator determine the purity of a physical ornament?

No. It performs a mathematical conversion using the purity you select. It cannot test or certify the actual purity of a physical gold item.

Does the conversion account for stones, solder or manufacturing loss?

No. The calculation preserves theoretical pure-gold content only. Physical jewellery may contain stones, solder, other metals or manufacturing variations.
